The Here and Now Of It
Some of you may remember this: there’s an old song that says, ‘In heaven there is no beer, that’s why we drink it here’.
There are a lot of things heaven doesn’t offer us. It doesn’t have the ups and downs of this amusement park we call Planet Earth. Life is like a roller coaster and we pay a lot of money here for the ride. We love the climb to the top and then the awesome free fall back to earth. We scream, and our hearts race, and then we pay to do it again. We also pay to be terrorized. Check the line at your local movie theater for the latest sold out horror film. We came here for the thrill of it. If we had wanted balanced, unending love and belonging we could have just stayed home. All humans opted for a ‘day’ at the theme park.
And then we cry about it. When we become dizzy and lost and scared we cry out to God, saying, ‘why?’ Why indeed, when we were the ones who pleaded for the ticket to the fun house, and anticipated being thrown into the darkness with delight.
You get to hug here, in the real physical sense. Heavenly hugging may actually be more meaningful and enjoyable, but it won’t be a physical earth hug. If you want one, you had better get it now. The same goes for overindulging in pizza and hot fudge sundaes. You can possibly recreate the experience when you get home, but you will probably have better things to do. This is the time – this is the place – this is the opportunity for things like that.
You – wonderful, marvelous, forceful, brave, intelligent, thoughtful, creative you. You sought this experience out. Please don’t go sit in the car and pout. The day will end before you know it and it will be time to go home. If life is like a roller coaster, then enjoy it for all it’s worth.
