A Time Of Reconciliation And Renewal –
This time of year holds special significance to those of the Christian faith because the focus is on death and resurrection. It is a time of year for personal reflection, confession, sorrow, penitence and rebirth. All traditions, however, have their sacred beliefs that revolve around self assessment, atonement, redemption and renewal. All of humanity is searching for reconciliation and renewal in one form or another, whether they recognize it or not.
For all traditions there is a basic beginning in personal truth. I must look at myself and determine what my faults are, where my strengths lie, and what, if anything, I am willing to do to improve myself. If I have caused harm, I need to seek ways to rectify what I have done. I need to accept forgiveness (often my own), or God’s mercy, and then I must set out on a new course to live my life a better way.
It is described beautifully in 12 Step Programs:
Step 4 Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Step 5 Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being, the exact nature of our wrongs.
Step 6 Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Step 7 Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
Step 8 Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
Step 9 Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Step 10 Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
This is a lifelong journey and also a lifelong full proof plan if we adhere to it, no matter what our religious belief. These truths are for everyone. We all fall short of the glory that is our innate soul and we can all strive to grow closer to our true selves every day if we so desire. During this Lenten Season, that precedes Easter, many people are focused on the same things. That makes this energy field of self-examination and renewal easier than if you were doing it on your own. May you be blessed in this important part of your journey of life.
